Never alone, defenceless or forgotten
The lyrics of an old song come to mind, which goes like this:
Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea
A great High Priest whose name is love
Who ever lives and pleads for me
My name is graven on His hands
My name is written on His heart
I know that while in heav’n He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart
No tongue can bid me thence depart.
Have you ever felt overlooked, defenceless or wondering if you have been forgotten?
When God’s people were feeling like this in the book of Isaiah, His response shows how He feels about us today.
See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands;
Your walls are continually before Me.
17 Your sons shall make haste;
Your destroyers and those who laid you waste
Shall go away from you. – Isaiah 49:16,17
First of all God wants our attention. When we feel overlooked, we should look to Him.
You are graven on His hands, so you know you have God’s attention.
There may have been times in the past when you needed to remember something important, so you wrote it on your hand. But unlike the song, this scripture does not say ‘your name’ is written on His hands, it says that ‘YOU’ are inscribed there. This goes beyond just your name which is written elsewhere. You are marked on a His hands as a constant reminder. He can never forget you, because you are always in front of a Him.
The hands of Jesus bear the scars from the nails which held him to the cross. You and I are in those scars, because His love for us is the reason He came.
It goes on to say your walls are ever before me. The walls of a city speak of its strength as they are the first line of defence, so those inside can enjoy safety. God says, you are not on your own and He is always keeping an eye on your defence. God will not let you be overcome by those who want to destroy you or prevent you from the good work planned for you to do.
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.– Ephesians 2:10
You will never be forgotten or overlooked by God. You are never utterly defenceless. Those who seek to destroy you, will go away when you look to Him.
“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will deliver him and honour him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him,
And show him My salvation.” – Psalm 91:14-16
You are never alone, never utterly defenceless and never forgotten by God.
