The great joy of Unity!
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
2 It is like the precious oil upon the head, Running down on the beard, The beard of Aaron,
Running down on the edge of his garments.
3 It is like the dew of Hermon,
Descending upon the mountains of Zion; For there the Lord commanded the blessing—
Life forevermore. – Psalm 133
Unity and oneness are important to the church. The bible speaks about how important unity is to us. Indeed, without unity, we would just be a disjointed pile of parts. The body of Christ needs unity, to be a body.
To live in unity is described as being both good and pleasant. Which says to me that it is acceptable to God and to the flesh.
God is good and He brings about good things in our life. If goodness is a demand of God, then those things which are pleasant are a delight to us.
Unity in the body satisfies both God and mankind. The words ‘good’ and ‘pleasant’ are found together in relation to worship.
Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good; Sing praises to His name, for it is pleasant. – Psalm 153:3
Because the lord is good, we sing our praises to Him and it is pleasant to us. I believe we should seek unity in our worship of God. This is God’s expectation and our joy.
The oil speaks of a Holy Spirit anointing which will be released when unity is in place. The oil covers every part of the body with its sweet smelling aroma, beginning with the head and all the way to the hem of the garment. No part is left out, the oil is available to all, because we are all part of His body.
Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. – 1 Corinthians 12:27
The dew of Hermon speaks of the waters which gather on the high mountain in Israel and bring refreshment. From there, the streams and rivers flow down and refresh the whole land, causing it to burst into life, so all may see the results of God’s supply.
When people see the results of God’s supply on our lives through love and unity, they will see the work of God which started in the high and secret place.
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” – John 13:34,35
When we live as men and women of God, receiving His refreshment and Holy Spirit anointing, we become a sweet smelling odour to God and a signpost to God’s goodness to those around us.
Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfil my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. – Philippians 2:1-4
The unity we need, begins with our humility and willingness to serve. We can all receive a spiritual blessing as the oil is poured out. I pray that refreshment will come into our lives from on high today as we seek that which unifies over those things which divide us.
