How do I keep on keeping on?
“It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his love never fails.
They are new every morning: great is Your faithfulness.” [Lamentations 3, 22-23].
When we hit a wall, it is often easy to give up and question ‘why me’ or ‘why do things never go my way’. This year we have definitely come to a halt with the plans we had made and may have found it harder to keep on keeping on. I can definitely admit to feeling this way on more than one occasion but I can also admit that perseverance does pay off.
I have never been a quitter even if it meant taking some detours and some longer journeys, which have led to brighter outcomes. If I had given up, I wouldn’t be where God had intended. Some may face bigger obstacles than others and compare our lives to those around us, but what we must be clear of is that God has a plan. Behind all those walls we meet, over all the hurdles and through every closed door, the way is set before us, just not in the way we may have originally planned.
In Proverbs 4, 25-26 we are told to
“Let your eyes look right on, and let your eyelids look straight before you. Think hard about the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established.”
Even through a devastating pandemic, God is present. Paul wrote: “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not [Galatians 6, 9]. Jesus did not give up when all was against Him. He was mocked, condemned and crucified but He too knew that the Lord God was in control and that His will would be done.
Think on this when you face times of trouble, when things don’t go the way you had hoped, Jesus endured opposition far greater than what we will ever encounter. And so, as Jesus did, we must keep on, because beyond those walls we are facing, is our Lord, waiting to show us the way.
Turn your eyes upon Jesus Look full in His wonderful face And the things of earth will grow strangely dim In the light of His glory and grace
