“He made the stars also”.
This very small statement was made to describe one of God’s activities on day 4 of creation. In many ways, the smallness of this statement shows the bigness of God.
Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. – Genesis 1:16
So with the estimated billions of stars in our galaxy and many more galaxies, God also made the stars. It is such a small statements for so many stars, but it really shows what a huge God we serve.
Our understanding of God’s awesome power is so very limited. We can only comprehend a very small amount of what God can do and we barely understand the vastness of what He has already done.
For instance, we know light travels at 186,000 miles per second, or put another way, six trillion miles a year. A beam of light from our sun at that speed, would still take about 20 billion years to reach the edge of the universe as we understand it. The ‘experts’ can’t actually number the stars, but this doesn’t stop them guessing. A couple of estimates I’ve read suggest the number is about 1 quadrillion. Written down it looks like this 1, 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000. That’s a lot of stars and the bible tells us that God not only knows their number, but also their name.
He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name. 5 Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite. – Psalm 147:4,5
When we consider the vastness of creation and all that God is capable of, it is more than we can ever hope to understand.
Job says that all we know of God is just the smallest amount, the edges of His power.
“Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways, And how small a whisper we hear of Him! But the thunder of His power who can understand?”
Job 26:14
The heavens are described by the psalmist as just the work of His fingers.
“When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?”
Psalms 8:3-4
Yet the hugeness of God and His infinite power are not the things we marvel at. More incredible is that God in all His glory should think of us and love us so much that He chooses to spend time with us.
How incredible to know that the God who made the universe, which we can barely understand, should be concerned about us today and He is still wants the best for us. God’s power is so awesome, that such a massive act can be summed up in five words, ‘He made the stars also’. It’s because of this, that we can truly say, if God is for us who can be against us?
